Emma Lapassouze

Biography

My artistic universe is a mixture of pictorial creations, sculpted assemblages and installations, which draw their roots from an interest in Matter and Materials. Very early on I liked to play with sand, earth, wood, immerse my hands in paint, feel the textures. I would say that my first relationship with painting is above all sensitive.

My influences are diverse and result from my university research but also from my meetings and my travels. My first great artistic discovery was the work of the Catalan artist Antoni Tapies and the power of his “Materistic” paintings. I also think of the Franco-Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki who strongly nourished my pictorial universe.

So I navigated for a long time between these two artistic trends: “Materialism” and Lyrical Abstraction to finally bring Matter out of the frame.

Today my work questions our relationship with the Living, with humans in our environment, with connections with our interior and exterior space.

I question our relationship to worlds, I propose combinations through dualities of matter and materials.

I paint spaces of connections using my favorite material: coffee grounds. I integrate body impressions into my paintings, I sculpt dead wood, I combine shards of glass, stones, plaster, trying to inject a form of energy into seemingly inert elements. .

It is a way of valorizing and rehabilitating Life at a time when the erasure of the subject and its environment has never been such a concern. At a time when the very extinction of the human species is in question, I am talking about our connection to the Living, the place of Humans as thinking Matter, natural elements and the relationship we have with them.
